Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reiki?

The word Reiki means “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign.” It is derived from Japanese, combining the words “rei” (universal) and “ki” (life energy). Reiki is a Japanese spiritual healing technique developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, though its roots are believed to be in ancient Japanese and Asian healing traditions.

How does it work?

Through the gentle laying on of hands, universal life energy is channeled through the practitioner’s hands to the recipient’s body and flows wherever it is needed to support each recipient’s unique healing. This transfer restores balance to the body’s energy system, clears energetic blockages, and promotes emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. In session, clients rest comfortably on a massage table, fully clothed. At the end of the session, clients have the opportunity to share about their experience if they so choose.

What are the benefits?

Reiki sessions offer numerous physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits:

Physical benefits include pain relief, improved sleep, muscle tension relief, enhanced healing from injuries and illnesses, heart rate regulation, lowered blood pressure, digestive system support, and increased energy levels.

Mental/Emotional benefits include reduced stress and anxiety, improved emotional balance, increased self-esteem, enhanced intuition, a stronger sense of connection, increased mental clarity, processing of grief and fear, and increased positive mood.

Spiritual benefits include enhanced spiritual connection, increased personal awareness, support of meditative states, and balancing of the chakras.

Is Reiki safe?

Reiki is considered a safe, non-invasive therapy involving the transfer of energy through gentle touch. While some recipients may experience temporary emotional or physical sensations during or following a session, Reiki has not been shown to cause any side effects. Recipients may feel heat during a Reiki session. This is a very common and generally positive experience, often indicating that the energy flow is strong and effective, and can signify that healing is taking place.

Individuals of all faiths or no faith can receive Reiki.

Does Reiki conflict with my religion?

Reiki is not tied to any religion, but is rather a spiritual practice that involves connecting with universal life force energy. It does not require any specific beliefs, rituals, or dogma. Reiki is not intended to be a substitute for religious belief. While some people of faith find that Reiki deepens their spiritual practice and strengthens their relationship with a Higher Power, Reiki welcomes individuals from all walks of life, regardless of religious background.

Can Reiki replace medical treatments?

Reiki is not intended or suggested to replace any medical treatment or therapy. Reiki is a complementary therapy that can be used alongside conventional treatments for a variety of conditions. Individuals interested in receiving Reiki should continue to work with any therapists, doctors, or specialists involved in their care.
